What do you need to go to the gym?

I’d like to preface this article by saying that most of these things are not absolute necessities and that you can still train well without them. However, with that being said, these items will most certainly help you in one way or another. We will highlight 4 things that you need to go to the gym.

  1. Lifting belt
  2. Lifting straps
  3. Earphones
  4. Appropriate shoes
  1. Lifting belt

A lifting belt will help you when bracing your core by increasing intra-abdominal pressure. Keep in mind that lifting belts should only be used after learning how to brace properly or else you may get hurt while trying to lift weights that you cannot handle. You should also mainly use them for exercises that demand a lot of core strength such as the squat or the deadlift. Wearing a lifting belt while performing bicep curls will only make you look ridiculous.

The cream of the crop in terms of lifting belts are the SBD belts and if you can afford them, then by all means go for it.

2. Lifting straps

Lifting straps will help you hold onto the bar/handles even when your grip has long given out. Do not listen to the people who will tell you not to use them when rowing as it ‘trains your grip’. If you want to train your grip, then add another exercise for the forearms. Your grip is far weaker than your back and not using lifting straps is simply limiting the amount of weight you can lift and in turn limiting the amount of muscle that you’ll put on. Invest in a good pair of lifting straps that will last!

3. Earphones

You may not think that earphones belong on a list of things you need to go to the gym, but let me prove you wrong. Training without music and being left with your own thoughts may be one of the most boring and annoying things to deal with, so save yourself the pain and invest in a decent pair of earphones. One thing to avoid are wires because they will get tangled and may get in the way while performing exercises.

In terms of value, you can’t get much better than the Raycon earbuds. Click the link below to purchase a pair.

4. Appropriate shoes

I know that you were thinking of wearing running shoes to the gym, however, there are much better alternatives. Running shoes do not provide enough ankle support for lateral movement and lack stability. They also sometimes have raised heels which will affect your exercises.

Instead you should opt for a shoe with a flat sole. That’s why the Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star and Vans are so popular in the lifting community. You can also wear barefoot shoes or if you have the guts and have clean feet, you can train barefoot.
